French
We aim to inspire an interest and confidence in languages; to provide a thorough grounding in vocabulary and grammar and to prepare our pupils for Scholarship, Common Entrance and the ISEB Certificate of Achievement, as appropriate.

Pupils visit Paris, France
French is taught throughout the school to all our pupils. In the Pre Prep French is taught via the medium of songs, acting, games and simple reading and writing using the Jolie Ronde course. Our aim is to provide pupils with good pronunciation, confidence and enthusiasm and to familiarise them with patterns of language and the skills of learning vocabulary. Years 3 and 4 use the interactive Petit Pont course, which is supported by an exciting software package.
In Year 5 language is taught via the medium of song and the interactive whiteboard resource Zim Zam Zoum; pupils also start to acquire the language more formally using the ISEB French Prep books. Basic grammar and verbs are taught. The course follows the CE syllabus very closely and takes us up to Year 8 and beyond to Scholarship Level.
Whilst our aim is to prepare all pupils for Common Entrance, a small number of pupils are prepared for the ISEB Certificate of Achievement (Level 1 and 2). We want all pupils to succeed in their study of languages.
Pupils are taught in mixed ability tutor groups until Year 5; they are set in Year 6 and streamed in Years 7 and 8.
Languages Outside The Classroom
We aim not only to teach the language but to show our pupils a foreign culture. This is achieved throughout the year with our themed language days and our celebration of the European Day of Languages. The juniors also enjoy French parties with culinary delights, while our Year 7 organise and run the French café at the annual charity fête.
Finally, the annual French Trip, for Years 7 and 8 is very popular. We alternate between two trips: the activity week at the Château de la Baudonnière in Normandy and the Paris Trip, with a cultural focus. Thus pupils have the chance to experience both French trips. The philosophy behind both trips is an exciting programme of activities and total immersion in the French language.
Latin
As part of the enrichment programme for our more able students we offer an introduction to Latin. We use the Cambridge Latin Course and our pupils sit the accredited assessments. Pupils can continue with their study at Latin at Framlingham College.
Not only does the study of Latin open up a whole new world, it helps our pupils with their grammatical awareness in both English and French and naturally enriches their vocabulary in both languages. Audio, video and online resources are also used.
Junior Latin
Junior Latin is run as an afterschool “Minimus Club”. Via the adventures of a cartoon mouse pupils are introduced to basic grammatical forms and vocabulary. This entertaining course is also supplemented by online resources.
Modern Languages Club
The Modern Languages Club is an after-school activity which provides pupils with a taster of a new Modern language every term. German, Italian and Spanish are taught and pupils learn the basics of conversational language. Online resources are also used.
All in all we would like pupils to realize the importance of learning a modern language in today’s world. Visits from foreign pupils are encouraged and we are happy invite adults and staff and older pupils from Framlingham College into the classroom for conversational work. We want pupils to feel secure in their knowledge and confident with their speaking. We want to create a good work ethic and pupils to take pride in their work and their ability to communicate in a foreign language. We also aim to open their minds and help with a greater understanding of the outside world.
