Communication Between Home
and Little Bears

Clothing

There is no uniform at The Little Bears so we suggest that children are dressed in comfortable clothes suitable for playing in. As part of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework children are encouraged to become independent in self care so we suggest that children wear clothes and shoes they can easily remove and put on without adult help. We do have aprons for the children to use but we strongly suggest that children wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Also we ask you to provide a set of spare clothes in a named bag in case your child does need to change for any reason.

As we go outside every day wellingtons are essential and we request that you supply a named pair that can be left at the nursery so they are always available. The weather is unpredictable so we also suggest that you put a light weight waterproof in your child’s bag so that we are prepared for all eventualities. In the summer we have a supply of Legionnaires hats for the children to protect them from the sun.

Food and Drink

Children are provided with a snack both morning and afternoon which consists of a drink of water or milk and a choice of fruit. We also offer breadsticks, dried fruit and other healthy options. Drinking water is available at all times for the children to access independently or on request.

Lunch is provided in the main dining hall and eaten with the rest of the Pre-prep department (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2). Children are provided with a hot main course which is nutritionally well balanced and a dessert. The nursery staff serve the children at the table and sit with them throughout the meal.

Birthdays are very special to children and so you are very welcome to provide a cake to celebrate if you wish. However we ask that any food items you bring in are nut free.

Behaviour

It is understood that there is a recognised code of conduct at Foundation Stage. The Children are expected to follow the ‘Golden Rules’ and to understand the difference between right and wrong, and the consequences of their own actions. Positive behaviour is consistently encouraged by the staff. On occasions when it is necessary to intervene, the situation is discussed and children are made to understand the importance of an apology and then offered an alternative activity to divert their attention.

Complaints

We welcome any suggestions and comments from parents, and we are always willing to talk about concerns or worries. Any concerns or complaints raised are taken seriously and will be passed on to the Headmaster. If preferred, parents may speak directly to the Headmaster. Anything that cannot be dealt with at that level will then follow the whole school complaints procedure.

Absence and Illness

If you plan to be absent during term time due to a holiday or for any reason other than sickness we ask that you notify us as soon as possible. If your child is unwell the best place for them is at home. As a guide we would suggest that if you have had to give your child medication to bring down a fever before coming to nursery then you should keep them at home. If your child has been sick or has had diarrhoea the medical advice is to keep your child at home for 48 hours. Should your child fall ill whilst at nursery we will contact you and advise you of the situation. If the situation requires it, for example of your child has a temperature or has been sick we will ask you to collect your child.

Should you require us to give medication to your child we will need to have written permission and instructions from you. All medicine is kept in a safe place; staff will administer and keep a record of this in our medical book. We do not keep a supply of any medicines such as painkillers.

Communications Between Home and The Little Bears

To ensure that children benefit as much as they can from The Little Bears environment our communication with you is of great importance. We are always willing to discuss your child’s progress with you and to help you with any queries or concerns in any way we can. Please feel free to talk to us when you drop off or collect your child but if you would prefer a more private discussion we can arrange a time and place to suit you.

We want to plan activities your child will enjoy so we welcome any information you can give on your child’s interests as well as any comments you have on how they are progressing at The Little Bears.

General information regarding activities planned for the children can be found on the notice board, please look out for the weekly focus notice and also for the half term plans displayed there. We also display other information that may be of help or interest to you.

You will receive a termly report of your child’s progress across the six areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage and we will keep a record of your child’s progress in a Learning Journey which you will receive when they leave The Little Bears. As part of our agreement with the Local Authority in receiving the Early Education Grant we also maintain a record of progress which we pass on to the Reception class.

We endeavour to provide the highest possible level of care and education at all times, however if you feel we have fallen short of this at any time please talk to the nursery teacher as soon as possible. If you still feel that your concern has not been addressed then please do discuss it with the Head of Pre-prep in the first instance who will investigate your concern.

Photographs

It is the custom and practice of most independent schools, and of this School, to include some photographs or images of Pupils in the school's promotional material such as the prospectus and website. We would not disclose the name or home address of a child without the Parents' consent. Parents who do not want their child's photograph or image to appear in any of the School's promotional material must write immediately to the Headmaster outlining their wishes.
