One Way to Mera La |
Thursday 01 March |
In 2010 Suffolk family man Colin de la Rue spent a sabbatical away from his City legal practice, taking his camera-bag on an expedition to Mera Peak, the highest trekking peak in Nepal and the highest of eight summits he set out to reach in aid of eight causes. From rainforests to rock-faces and from alpine deserts to snow-clad summits, his illustrated talk – first given earlier this year at the Royal Geographical Society – celebrates the majesty of the mountains and their diverse natural worlds. It evokes their excitements and dramas with action footage from technical climbs and helicopter rescue captured on film. And it offers a chance to be part of a journey, where a lethal storm would cause us to pose searching questions. Why do people go to these places? What do they gain? And what can they share with others when they return? |
