Prep School pupils give it their all at the IAPS National Athletic Championships

Friday 7 Jul 2017

On Tuesday 4th July the IAPS National Athletic Championship was held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. This year Framlingham College Prep School had the largest ever group of athletes qualify. We had six individuals and a relay team make it through from the regional qualifies held at Bedford earlier in the term. I am delighted to report that all of them finished in at least the top 12 for their event, no mean feat considering the hundreds of schools that enter.

  • The U13 4x100m relay team of Ben Smart, Nat Salsby, Freddie and Will Lamprell came 12th. This is an even more remarkable achievement when you hear that two of the four are actually a year young for the event!
  • Freya Faulkner came 9th in the U14 75m Hurdles, only missing out on a place in the final by 0.4sec.
  • Mahbhir Mahmud took on the punishing U14 300m and also came 9th.
  • Louie Mayall throw a Personal best of 32.26m to come 6th in the U13 Javelin.
  • Archie Shelley-Taylor throw 30.41m and came 4th in the U13 Discus, just a few centimetres away from a bronze medal.
  • Emma Williamson ran a great race to qualify for the 70m Hurdles and in the final came in 3rd to win the Bronze Medal.
  • Will Lamprell had a very busy couple of hours in the middle of the day as the three events he had qualified for where all timetabled very close together. Having literally just finished his relay race he switched shoes and was immediately into the U13 Shot Putt. Despite the gruelling schedule Will managed a very respectable 11.91m, which placed him 2nd and a Silver medal. However this was not the only medal he won, his events started with the  U13 High Jump. In a strong field of 16 jumper, Will managed to clear 1.54m placing him 1st and National IAPS Champion.

Bruce Wilson said, “I could not be prouder of these nine athletes, their commitment to their training and their desire to improve is second to none and they deserve the rewards they have achieved. This has been one of the most successful athletic seasons and praise should also go to all the prep school children that have made their contribution. Despite the term ending, Will and Emma will continue their seasons with club competitions. I wish them all the best and look forward to talking about even more fantastic achievements in September.”
